Sessions of the Seekers
Session Logs
Session 1 - 2.7.26
Session 2 - 3.7.26
The Seeker’s took on the mission to stop the Children of Ibraxus from using an obsidian skull to open a gateway in the City of Arches which would unleash demons into the city. The fate of a spy who had been keeping an eye on the cult’s activities was also hanging in the balance.
With a bard in the party (Ari, a high elf from the City) the players decided to have Ari disguise herself based the clothing they took from the cultist they encountered in the first session, which was the origin of the current mission. Thanks to a successful disguise, and the undisguised party members (Ashley, human rogue from Faerun, and Ophelia, aasimar monk from the City) staying out of sight, Ari was able to get some information on the situation from a pair a cultists discovered guarding the captured spy Quintus Harrowtoes. Once Ari was satisfied she had learned all she could, the players decided it would be easier to eliminate the two cultists than trying to persuade them to leave. A surprise attack gave them the advantage when combat started, but no free actions (this comes up again soon). Quintus was rescued, and he informed the group they needed to interrupt the ritual already underway.
Now it was time for the party to go deeper into the ancient tomb housing the gateway to an abyssal realm. Unfortunately, Ophelia failed her attempt to quietly open a crumbling stone door to the older portions of the tomb, which alerted the cultists deeper within to be on their guard. As the adventurers made their way into a dark tunnel, they smartly grabbed a torch from the previous room as their light source and used it to illuminate the murals on the walls and a tripwire set in their path. Ashley’s training in history, thanks to his time spent at the Museum of Worlds Beyond, told him that these murals depicted the ancient history of the City of Arches when it was ruled by the Nameless King.
Before entering these deeper chambers, Ophelia attempted to disguise herself with a robe taken from a fallen cultist and Ari cast invisibility on Ashley. Clearly, these players prefer to get the jump on any potential adversaries. Entering the ritual chamber, Ari led the way still in full disguise and stalling for time as they got into position, with Ophelia just barely managing to cover her divine origins under cloak and cowl. Ashley, still invisible, got into position for a sneak attack. Because the players had worked hard to establish an element of surprise, including a fully invisible rogue going for his signature sneak attack, I allowed the rogue’s attack roll before we fell into initiative as rolled with no other modifiers on initiative. I explained the normal rules for surprise in 5.5E and that this was a special situation which did not establish precedence.
From here, the party had not problem taking out all the cultists and bringing the ritual to an end. During the fight, they did get a glimpse into the horrors that the cultists were attempting to unleash, as a gigantic yellow eye glared at them through the open portal. The party stood strong in the face of this evil, with Ari rolling a nat 20 and responding with her own defiant glower!
With the conclusion of this successful mission, the three heroes have established themselves as reliable members of the Seeker’s of the Sun, whom may be called upon by the city’s spymaster or the leader of their own guild.
